According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the U.S. average hourly wage for July 2018 is $27.05, which is an additional $0.07 per hour jump from last month.
Employers added 157,000 jobs in July and the unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent, near an 18-year low. While the unemployed typically outnumber job openings, recent findings show that for the third straight month in a row there are more available jobs than unemployed people.
Contributing to the number of jobs added in July is the addition of 37,000 jobs in Manufacturing, 34,000 in Healthcare and Social Services, and over 19,000 in the Construction industry.
What does this mean to employers?
Job openings are outnumbering the unemployed and the proportion of workers quitting their jobs is at the highest level in nearly 13 years. And, while companies are competing to attract and retain employees, they remain slow to increase wages. Average hourly wages rose 2.7 percent in July, increasing 71 cents throughout the year.
